Welcome Back to Cherry Avenue

Dear Cherry Families,

Welcome back to our returning families.  To our new families, welcome to the Cherry community!  We hope you all enjoyed the fun filled summer days, and it is with great enthusiasm that we invite you to get ready for another exciting and successful school year. We are thrilled to be starting the year as Co-Presidents and on behalf of the Cherry Avenue PTA would like to welcome all of you to the 2014-2015 school year and introduce your PTA Board:

  • Lisa Moynihan – Vice President (mom of Liam 5th, Olivia 2nd  & Molly K)
  • Kristin Noack – Treasurer (mom of Abigail 4th)
  • Christine Miller – Recording Secretary (mom of Steven 6th & Devin 3rd)
  • Jacqueline Cabrera – Corresponding Secretary (mom of Abigail 3rd & Isabella K)

The PTA has already been busy this summer planning the programs and activities that will make this a fabulous year for our children.  We’ve already made it through our first two events – our 3rd Annual Kindergarten Playdate which was a huge success and our Staff/Student Welcoming!

It has always been our mission at Cherry Avenue to encourage and support our parents, teachers and students and there is no better way to do that than to get involved in the PTA. There is no bigger thrill for our children than to see their families involved in their education. So whether you can help run a committee, volunteer at an event, or just simply join the PTA, no effort is too small.

It is because of the strong volunteer efforts of our parents and the dedication of our teachers that we are able to offer so many academic and cultural activities throughout the school year. Our fundraising helps provide cultural arts assemblies, family fun events like our Worldwide Day of Play, Halloween Family Fun Night, Winter Dance, Bingo, Field Day, End of Year Picnic, Book Fairs and so much more.  We are also so excited that the National Circus Project will be returning to Cherry along with the 5th Grade Circus!

Please take the time to attend our PTA meetings to find out more about our many committees and to fill out the Volunteer Request and PTA Membership forms. Your contribution, whether it is your time, knowledge, or resources make a difference. We personally invite you to become an involved member at Cherry Avenue. We thank you for helping in any way you can and showing your children the importance you place on their education!

We welcome your feedback, so please don’t hesitate to contact us if you have any questions or comments. Thank you and have a great year!

Sincerely,

Danielle Watson (mom of Andrew 5th, Zack 3rd Nicholas, 2nd & Bret in preschool)

Jennifer Wilson (mom of Ryan 6th & Riley 1st)

UPSTANDER WEEK

UPSTANDER WEEK

at Cherry Avenue Elementary

The week of November 12th–15th, we are going to help kids learn how to

Be An Upstander, Not A Bystander!

An Upstander is a person who knows the way someone is being treated is wrong, and does something to make things right.  That takes courage, and makes a huge difference in our world.  It is a challenge for children at any age to deal with either being bullied, or seeing a friend or fellow student being bullied, and many don’t know what to do.  Upstander Week will begin to provide our students with the tools they need to deal with those situations if they arise.

Each day during morning announcements, Dr. Ihne will be tasking our kids with a daily Upstander Challenge.  It may be something as simple as ‘say hi to three new people today’ or ‘ask someone new to play today.’  Make sure to ask your child each day what the Upstander Challenge was and how they did!

(Daily challenges will also be posted on the Cherry Avenue Elementary Facebook page and at www.cherrypta.digitalpto.com).

We also have some other fun activities planned this week:

  • TUESDAY:  Upstander week will kick-off with our TEAM UP AGAINST BULLYING day!  Students and staff from each grade level are going to show unity and how easy it is to work together.  Kindergarten & 1st graders wear BLUE.  2nd & 3rd graders wear PURPLE.  4th & 5th graders wear WHITE.

In addition, each class will be having a mini assembly, where they will take the Upstander pledge, put their handprint on our                      cafeteria bulletin boards to symbolize their commitment of ‘hands off to bullying,’ and working with classmates to create Upstander posters that will be proudly hung throughout the school.

  • WEDNESDAY:  DON’T BE A GRINCH DAY!  Wear green to show there is no need to point out negative things in others.  Kind words and actions make a difference.  Weather permitting, at recess they will write positive messages or draw pictures that show what fabulous upstanders we have at Cherry!
  • THURSDAY:   BE A GOOD SPORT!  Wear your favorite team jersey to school.  Play nicely with others – don’t use hurtful names or words when they don’t play as well as you.  If you see someone playing alone, encourage them to join in.
  • FRIDAY:  STAND UP FOR CHERRY!  Wear red to school to support all your schoolmates in making Cherry good choices in treating others.

If you have any questions about Upstander Week at Cherry, please contact either PTA President Marisa Milo at mmmilo99@aol.com or School Social Worker Mrs. Barczak at nbarczak@sayvilleschools.org.

Boxtops & Campbell’s Labels For Education

BOX TOPS & CAMPBELL’S LABELS FOR EDUCATION

Please send all your Box Tops and Labels in by Wednesday the 23rd.

Reminder: All the proceeds go towards purchasing each student a Cherry Avenue 2014 Field Day t-shirt!
In order to make it happen, we have set a goal of $2,000 and need everyone’s help!
Please continue to save Box Tops and Campbell’s Labels and ask your family and friends to save them for you, too!

This is a very easy way to support the PTA with big benefits.

When sending in tops or labels, please be sure to follow the directions below.
It really makes a difference and helps our volunteers be more efficient.

1. Separate BOX TOPS from CAMPBELL’S LABELS.
2. Check all BOX TOPS for expired ones.  We cannot submit expired box tops.
3. Count BOX TOPS into groups of 50, if possible & put BOX TOPS in Ziploc bags or tape them to a sheet of paper.
4. CAMPBELL’S LABELS must include the UPCs, but not the entire label.
5. Submit CAMPBELL’S LABELS in a SEPARATE Ziploc or paper bag (do not tape them to a sheet of paper).

The committee will be getting together on Thursday night to count Box Tops. If you can join us, please email Laura for all the details.
